🚆 Background: What Are “150 Private Trains”?

In January 2025, Niti Aayog and Indian Railways jointly proposed running 150 passenger train services on ~100 routes, operated by private entities under PPP (public–private partnership) mode, with an anticipated investment of around ₹22,500 crore
These routes were grouped into 10–12 clusters covering key corridors such as Mumbai–Delhi, New Delhi–Patna, Allahabad–Pune, Dadar–Vadodara, Howrah–Chennai, Secunderabad–Guwahati, and others

Initial plan included:
- 12 trains by FY 2025–23,
- 45 more in FY 2025–24,
- 50 in FY 2025–26,
- 44 in FY 2026–27,
- Totalling 151 private train services by end of FY 2026–27

Guwahati cluster, Chennai cluster, Secunderabad cluster, and Howrah cluster similarly feature long‑haul routes like Guwahati–Tilak Bridge, Chennai–Coimbatore, Vijayawada–Visakhapatnam, Howrah–Patna, Howrah–Chennai, etc.

Despite the ambitious plan, only a handful of private-run passenger trains are operational in India as of mid‑2025:
- Examples include the Lucknow–New Delhi Tejas Express (IRCTC‑operated, started October 2025) and Mumbai–Ahmedabad Tejas Express—both managed directly by IRCTC, a government‑linked company, not independent private players
The full rollout of 150 private trains across these identified routes is still pending, awaiting finalization of RFQs, tendering, and pilot operations.
