Konkan Railway Gears Up for Monsoon
Konkan Railway Gears Up for Monsoon
This year our Nation is fighting the global Covid-19 pandemic. During the situation of this pandemic COVID-19, Konkan Railway is fully committed to the welfare of the countrymen and is making all efforts to ensure availability of essential commodities through its uninterrupted freight services. Konkan Railway staff is also making all efforts to maintain the track, ensuring all safety related guidelines and maintaining hygiene & social distancing norms.
The Konkan region is known to receive heavy rainfall during the monsoon seasons. Konkan Railway runs through this region and comprises of a 740Km long route. Konkan Railway gears up on the onset of Monsoons season in Konkan region. All planned safety works on this route from KOLAD (after Roha station of Central Railway) to THOKUR (before Mangaluru station) have been completed. Special attention has been given to catch water drain cleaning and inspection of cuttings. The large scale geo-safety works executed along the railway line in last few years have significantly reduced the incidences of boulder fall and soil slip, thus ensuring safe running of trains. No major disruption to train services have occurred on account of boulder fall during monsoons in last 7 years.
Konkan Railway will conduct Monsoon Patrolling as per the provisions of Indian Railway Permanent Way Manual to ensure safe running of trains. About 974 personnel will patrol the Konkan Railway route during the monsoon. Vulnerable locations will be patrolled round the clock and Stationary Watchmen will be deployed for 24 hours at critical locations. Speed restrictions will be imposed at vulnerable locations. BRN mounted excavators have been kept ready at all nominated points for quick movement in case of any emergency.
Instructions have also been issued to the loco pilots to run the trains at a reduced speed of 40 kmph in case of heavy rainfall when visibility is limited. Self-propelled ARMVs (Accident Relief Medical Van), with provision of Operation Theatre and providing emergency medical aid are kept ready at Ratnagiri and Verna (Goa) along with ART (Accident Relief Train).
Mobile phones have been provided to all safety category staff to contact control office / station in emergency. Both Loco Pilots and Guards of trains have been provided with Walkie-talkie sets as well as every station on Konkan Railway is equipped with 25 Watt VHF base station. This enables wireless communication between the train crew as well as train crew and Station Master. Emergency Communication (EMC) sockets have been provided at a distance of average 1 Km along the Konkan Railway route that enables the Patrolmen, Watchmen, Loco Pilots, Guard and other field maintenance staff to contact Station Master and control office during any emergency situations. Satellite phone communication has been provided in ARMV (Accident Relief Medical Van) for emergency contact, when ARMV is ordered in service. All main signal aspects on Konkan Railway are now replaced with LED for improving signal visibility.
Self-recording rain gauges have been installed at 9 stations viz. Mangaon, Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Vilwade, Kanakavali, Madgaon, Karwar, Bhatkal & Udupi which will record the rainfall in the region and alert Officials in case of increased rainfall. Flood warning systems for bridges have been provided at 3 locations will alert Officials in case of flash flood in the river when water flow reaches above danger Level.
Control rooms at Belapur, Ratnagiri and Madgaon, will work 24 x 7 during monsoon period for ensuring safe running of trains. Monsoon Time Table will come into effect from 10th June, 2025 upto 31st Oct, 2025. Passengers may check train status online during monsoon by visiting www.konkanrailway.com or using KRCL App by downloading from Google Play Store or by dialing 139.
Konkan Railway aims to ensure safe travel for its passengers in the coming monsoon with the measures taken above.
Here’s a detailed and verified summary of Konkan Railway’s comprehensive monsoon preparedness plan for 2025, aimed at ensuring robust, safe operations across the challenging Konkan terrain:
Contents
🌧️ Monsoon Timeline & Operational Protocol
- A dedicated monsoon timetable will be in effect from June 15 to October 20, 2025, earlier than usual to better align with weather patterns and to ensure passenger safety.
([turn0search0]turn0search8) - Sectional speed limits are enforced, with reduced speeds down to 40 km/h in areas with poor visibility or heavy rainfall.
([turn0search0]turn0search6)
🛠️ Infrastructure & Geo-Safety Measures
- Pre-monsoon preparations include:
- Thorough cleaning of catchwater drains
- Inspection and treatment of vulnerable cuttings, including slope flattening, rock bolt installations, shotcreting, and gabion wall strengthening
- Over a decade of geo‑safety upgrades have effectively reduced rockfall incidents by ~99% in key sections of the network
([turn0search0]turn0search6]turn0search5)
👥 Patrol & Emergency Response Operations
- Konkan Railway has deployed 636–636 staff for round-the-clock patrolling at vulnerable spots along the route.
([turn0search0]turn0search2) - Emergency assets are strategically placed:
- Rail Maintenance Vehicles at nine locations including Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Kankavali, Verna, Karwar, and Udupi
- BRN-mounted excavators stationed at critical points for rapid deployment
- Accident Relief Medical Vans (ARMVs) with onboard OTs at Ratnagiri and Verna
- An Accident Relief Train (ART) on standby at Verna, mobilizable within 15 minutes
([turn0search0]turn0search6)
📡 Advanced Communication & Monitoring Setup
- Communication systems reinforced with:
- Emergency Communication (EMC) sockets at 1 km intervals along the route
- VHF radios, walkie-talkies, and mobile phones for staff and loco crews
- Satellite phones in relief vehicles for uninterrupted communications during severe conditions
