🚆 Allotment of RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) Berths to Passengers – Explained
RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) is a type of railway reservation where a passenger is allowed to board the train and travel, but may not be allotted a full berth initially. Instead, they get a seat (shared berth), with a chance to be upgraded if there are cancellations or no-shows.
🪑 What Does an RAC Ticket Guarantee?
- Travel Guarantee: RAC passengers are allowed to board the train and travel.
- Seating Arrangement: They are given two seats per berth, meaning two RAC passengers share one side lower berth.
- Upgrade Possibility: If other passengers cancel or do not show up, RAC status may be automatically upgraded to full berth before or during charting.
✅ How RAC Berths Are Allotted
- Booking Phase:
- RAC tickets are issued after confirmed berths are fully booked.
- Each coach has a limited number of berths reserved exclusively for RAC.
- Chart Preparation (Usually ~4 hours before departure):
- Cancellations or no-shows free up confirmed berths.
- These are allotted to RAC passengers in priority order (first come, first served).
- Remaining RACs still get to board and occupy the side-lower berth as sitting space (shared).
- On Journey Day:
- Train managers or TTEs might further upgrade RAC passengers if more berths become vacant (due to last-minute cancellations or no-shows at the station).
🛏️ Typical Coach RAC Berth Allocation
| Coach Type | Approx. RAC Berths Allocated |
|---|---|
| Sleeper (SL) | 7–8 side lower berths → 14 RAC |
| 3AC (Bogie) | 4–5 side lower berths → 8–10 RAC |
| 2AC | 2–3 RAC seats |
| 1AC | Usually, no RAC (only WL) |
Note: These numbers vary depending on train, class, and zone.

ℹ️ Tips for RAC Passengers
- Always check final chart status online or via SMS before travel.
- Keep IRCTC account or SMS alerts on to track RAC → Confirmed upgrade.
- If you remain RAC even after charting, TTE may still allot a berth during journey.
