Anaconda Train in India

KHARAGPUR DIVISION OF SER REACHED A NEW MILESTONE BY JOINING 3 RAKES TO RUN “ANACONDA FREIGHT TRAIN’’

Kharagpur Division of South Eastern Railway reached a new milestone by joining 3 rakes to run Anaconda Freight Train yesterday (1st July, 2025) boosting heavy haul train operation. The Anaconda Freight Train consisted of 177 wagons. This is the first occasion where such heavy haul train moved between two states. The train consisted of two loaded rakes of Iron Ore and one empty rake of freight wagons. The train was formed at Narayangarh near Kharagpur bringing the 3 rakes from other stations in the vicinity. The entire train was hauled by 6 Locos which are usually used in freight trains.

The Anaconda Freight Train left Narayangarh of Kharagpur-Bhadrak Section of South Eastern Railway and covered a distance of 150 KMs in 3 hrs 35 minutes over SER system on its way to Dhamra Port in Odisha. The train covered a total distance of 200 Kms.

Here’s a comprehensive overview of what’s referred to as the “Anaconda Train” in the context of Indian Railways:

🐍 What Is the Anaconda Train?

  • The term “Anaconda Train” refers to ultra-long freight trains formed by joining three separate goods rakes into one continuous train.
  • This formation strategy is part of Indian Railways’ freight optimization efforts and is enabled by Distributed Power Control System (DPCS) technology.turn0search5turn0search2turn0search11

🚆 Key Milestones

✅ Super Anaconda (2025)

  • In mid‑2025, South East Central Railway (Nagpur/ Bilaspur/ Chakradharpur divisions) operated what became known as the “Super Anaconda”:
    • Three loaded freight rakes joined into a single train of 177 wagons, hauling ~15,000 tonnes of coal.
    • Total train length was approximately 2 km.turn0search0turn0search7turn0search9
    • It operated between Bhilai–Korba (Odisha/Chhattisgarh) and continued into Chakradharpur–Rourkela divisions.turn0search4turn0search2

🐍 Shesh Naag (2025)

  • A few days later, SECR again combined four BOXN rakes to form the “Shesh Naag” freight train — about 2.8 km long, carrying empty wagons, hauled by four electric locos, intended for testing long-haul logistics.turn0search11turn0search3

🔥 Super Vasuki (2025)

  • In August 2025, Indian Railways set a new record with “Super Vasuki”, a 3.5 km long rake with 295 loaded wagons, moved with five locomotives, carrying around 27,000 tonnes. This surpassed all previous Anaconda train formations.turn0search6

⚙️ How It Works

  • Distributed Power Control System (DPCS) allows synchronized control of multiple locomotives (front and mid-location), reducing stress on couplers and ensuring operational stability.
  • Advantages:
    • Faster freight movement with fewer shunting operations.
    • Reduced crew costs and track congestion.
    • Increased haulage capacity and energy efficiency.turn0search5turn0search3

🌟 Impact & Significance

  • These Anaconda-style formations—Super Anaconda, Shesh Naag, and Super Vasuki—are examples of India’s attempt to optimize freight logistics.
  • These long-haul trains are especially impactful where Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFC) are still under progress; they help reduce pressure on passenger corridors.turn0search6
  • According to reports, such trains get higher operational priority and minimize turnaround times.turn0search8turn0search3

📋 Summary Table

Name No. of Rakes Wagons Length Load Type Route/Division
Super Anaconda 3 loaded 177 ~2 km Loaded (coal) Bilaspur–Chakradharpur (SECR)
Shesh Naag 4 empty 251 ~2.8 km Empty Nagpur–Bilaspur (SECR)
Super Vasuki 5 locos 295 ~3.5 km Loaded Eastern/Western corridors trial

🧠 What It’s Not

The “Anaconda Train” has sometimes been misused in discussions to refer to snake sightings onboard passenger trains—such as a Reddit thread about a rail passenger discovering a python in a coach. That is unrelated and not the Anaconda freight initiative.turn0reddit19turn0reddit20

✅ Key Takeaways

  • Anaconda trains are innovative freight operations joining multiple rakes to improve logistics.
  • India’s longest freight experiments—Super Anaconda (2025), Shesh Naag (2025), Super Vasuki (2025)—reflect the country’s shift toward handling high-volume freight efficiently.
  • These trials pave the way for future use on Dedicated Freight Corridors, offering reduced congestion and better scalability.
