A Major milestone for Completion of Bhadrachalam Road – Sattupalli New Rail Line Project South Central Railway and M/S. Singareni Collieries Company Limited enter into MoU Project targeted for completion by December, 2025

Bhadrachalam Road – Sattupalli new rail line project is one of the most important ongoing projects on South Central Railway (SCR). This new line is being jointly developed by SCR and M/S. Singareni Collieries Limited (SCCL) for transporting coal from the nearby mines of SCCL located at Sattupalli area. As a part of this, a giant step has been taken today by signing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between SCR and SCCL and a cheque of Rs 200 crores has been handed over by M/S. SCCL during the meeting held at Rail Nilayam, SCR headquarters today i.e., 11th March, 2025.

Bhadrachalam Road – Sattupalli new rail line Project was sanctioned in the year 2010-11 with joint participation of Railways and M/s SCCL, with an agreement that the land cost to be borne by Railways and Construction cost by M/s SCCL.

Earlier, in March, 2025, detailed estimate was sanctioned by Railway Board for a total cost of Rs. 704 crores. Accordingly, M/s SCCL had deposited a total amount of Rs. 156.38 Cr to Railways towards the cost of work. Later on, during the course of execution, revised estimate has been prepared for accommodating additional functional requirements costing to Rs 927.94 Cr (Railways Rs 309.39 Cr & M/s SCCL Rs 618.55 Cr). M/S. SCCL has given its consent for the revised estimate and handed over a cheque for Rs 200 Crore today (taking its total deposit to Rs 356 crore).

The project has been taken up with utmost importance by both the organisations which is reflected in 90% of the land proposed by the Railways being acquired with the support of the Government of Telangana in a record time of about six months, enabling early completion of the project. The project is targeted to be completed by the end of December 2025.

Expected Benefits of the Project: The project is a win-win situation for both Railways and M/s SCCL:

  • Facilitates environment friendly transportation of coal from open cast coal mines around Sattupalli area.
  • Enables in generation of additional originating loading of about 8 – 9 Million tonnes of Coal from Sattupalli to Bhadrachalam for feeding power plants like Kothagudem Thermal Power Station near Bhadrachalam and Kondapalli Thermal Power Station near Kondapalli.
  • Commencement of this new line will generate approximate revenue to a tune of Rs 160 crores per annum to Railways.
  • Helps in the development of infrastructure and socio-economic growth in both BhadradriKothagudem and Khammam districts.
  • Provides rail connectivity to this area and helps in reduction of pollution due to reduced road transportation.

On this occasion, Shri Gajanan Mallya, General Manager, SCR expressed his happiness and stated that this step will help in speeding up the execution of the entire project. He also stated that South Central Railway and M/S. Singareni Collieries Company Limited have been long-standing growth partners and the construction of the new railway line will give further fillip to the growth of both the Organisations.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri N. Sridhar, IAS, Chairman & Managing Director, SCCL assured that the SCCL will extend all the possible support for early completion of the project which will benefit both the organizations. He also requested the Railway authorities to complete and commission the project by the end of this calendar year.
