Here’s a comprehensive overview of Circular Journey Tickets—their features, rules, and how they can be booked—especially applicable to Northern Railway (as part of standard circular tour tickets):

What Are Circular Journey Tickets?

These are special tickets issued by Indian Railways for journeys that start and end at the same station (forming a loop or “circle”). Ideal for pilgrimages, sightseeing, or multi-stop excursions.

  • Unlike regular round trips, they allow travel across multiple legs without individual bookings.
  • Multiple zones (including Northern Railway) offer both standard and custom (non-standard) circular fare options.

Key Rules & Features (Railway Board Guidelines)

According to official railway rules (Railway Board as on May 1, 2007):

  1. Eligibility: Any journey starting and ending at the same station qualifies. The return shouldn’t just be via the shortest route or within 15% longer than the shortest—otherwise considered regular travel.
  2. Class Availability: Tickets can be issued in any class, including AC and Sleeper.
  3. Maximum Break Journeys: Up to 8 intermediate stops permitted. No endorsements required for these breaks.
  4. Validity: Determined by distance:
    • Travel days: 1 day per 400 km or part thereof
    • Break (stopover) days: 1 day per 200 km or part thereof
  5. Fare Calculation: Charged as two single journey fares, each half the total circular distance, plus standard reservation and surcharge charges.
  6. Upgrades: If you ride in a higher class or train category, pay the fare difference using point-to-point rates.
  7. Passenger Signature: Required on the ticket at the start of the journey.

Benefits of Circular Journey Tickets

  • Cost Savings: Telescopic fare structure is often lower than multiple point-to-point bookings.
  • Convenience: You avoid multiple ticket purchases for each leg.
  • Flexibility: Up to 8 break journeys allowed without separate endorsement.

Booking Process

  1. Select a Standard Itinerary: Some zones publish standard circular routes—check if one matches your journey.
  2. Define Your Itinerary: If no standard route fits, submit a custom itinerary to your zone’s Divisional Commercial Manager or Station Manager.
  3. Get Fare Calculated: The ticket office will compute the fare based on your travel plan.
  4. Purchase Ticket: Pay the computed fare at the booking office.
  5. Reserve Specific Trains: Once the ticket is issued, you reserve berths for individual legs via normal reservation channels.

Zone-Specific Info

  • Northern Railway, like other zones, offers both standard and custom circular journey tickets. You can inquire at major stations or contact zonal officials for details.
