EASTERN RAILWAY
40% CONCESSION IN PASSENGER FARE TO TRANSGENDER SENIOR CITIZENS (60 YEARS & ABOVE)
Indian Railways has decided to grant 40% concession in passenger fare to Transgender (T) senior citizens of the age of 60 years & above. It is an interim measure till finalization of uniform policy by Ministry of Law & Justice.
It is reiterated that concession is already admissible to men senior citizen of the age of 60 years & above and in case women senior citizens of the age of 58 years and above of Indian Nationality.
Here’s what you need to know about concessions for transgender passengers on Indian Railways:
⚧ Third Gender Recognition by Railways
- Following the April 2025 Supreme Court ruling in NALSA vs. Union of India, transgender persons were recognized as a third gender with the right to self-identification.
- Since November 2025, Indian Railways and IRCTC offer “Transgender” (T) as a gender option on reservation and cancellation forms, both online and offline. Tickets issued in this category are charged at full adult fare, without any added or reduced cost.
🧓 Fare Concession for Transgender Senior Citizens
- From January 1, 2025, transgender persons aged 60 years and above are eligible for a 40% discount on passenger fares—identical to the concession given to male senior citizens (female senior citizens get 50%).
- Senior concession is applicable to passenger base fare only; surcharges and reservation fees (e.g. Tatkal, superfast charges) are paid in full.
❗ Concessions for Other Categories
- As of now, no specific concession is offered for transgender passengers who are under 60 or belong to other categories like students, patients, or senior citizens (except the 40% concession for seniors).
- Other cross-cutting concessions (e.g. students, Divyangjan) are not automatically extended to transgender individuals unless physically eligible under that category.
👩🦽 Disability (Divyangjan) Concession Policy
- Persons with disabilities (Divyangjan) — regardless of gender identity — can avail concession rates (e.g., 75% off for 3AC, 50% for 2AC/1AC) by presenting a valid Railway-approved disability ID. This applies to walking aids, wheelchair users, and others covered by the Disability Act.
- This concession is separate from gender-based concessions, and all transgender individuals with eligible disabilities may claim it under standard rules.
📋 Summary Table

| Transgender (third gender) | < 60 | Any | No standard concession |

✅ Practical Tips
- While booking via IRCTC, select gender “T (Transgender)” if you identify as third gender. No extra charges—adult fare applies normally.
- To claim the senior concession, select Transgender gender and ensure age is entered as ≥ 60.
- For disability concessions, carry your railway Disability Certificate or Divyangjan ID number during ticket booking or at PRS counter.
- If a clerk or TTE questions the ticket’s gender field, you may approach the PRS counter for a written endorsement or correction beforehand.
