Dedicated Freight Corridor Status 2025 – Dedicated Freight Corridor 2025
Presently, Ministry of Railways is implementing two Dedicated Freight Corridors namely, Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor from Ludhiana to Dankuni (1856 km.) and Western Dedicated Freight Corridor from Dadri to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (1504 km.). These corridors are targeted to be completed in phases by December 2025. In addition, Ministry of Railways has decided to undertake Detailed Project Reports (DPR) for new Dedicated Freight corridors on the following routes :
1. East Coast corridor- Kharagpur to Vijayawada
2. East-West Sub-corridor (i) – Bhusaval-Wardha-Nagpur-Rajkharswan-Kharagpur-Uluberia-Dankuni
East-West Sub-corridor (ii) – Rajkharswan-Kalipahari-Andal
3. North – South sub-corridor – Vijayawada- Nagpur-Itarsi
A Concession Agreement has been signed between Ministry of Railways (MOR) and Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) on 28th February 2014 which inter alia enjoins DFCCIL to allow authorized Railway users including Indian Railways to run their own trains on the DFC network.
This press release is based on information given by the Minister of Railways and Commerce & Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha today.
Here is the current status (as of mid‑2025) of the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) network managed by DFCCIL:
✅ Current Operational Corridors
🔷 Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC)
- Fully commissioned and operational since early 2024, covering the full length from Ludhiana to Dankuni (~1,337 km)
- Handles approximately 209 trains per day averaging 20-ft coal and container movements in January 2025
🔶 Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC)
- Length: ~1,506 km from Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT), Navi Mumbai to Dadri in UP.
- As of mid‑2024, 93.2% complete; by mid‑2025 physical work is ~96.4% done
- Operations already cover major sections, including Maharashtra’s Umbergaon–Saphale stretch since April 2025
- Remaining ~100 km stretch (Vaitarna–JNPT) is on track for full commissioning by October–December 2025
- Even before full commissioning, ~182 trains/day already run over WDFC—a combined average of 391 trains/day across the two corridors in early 2025
🚧 Future Dedicated Corridors (Under DPR/Planning)
Three additional corridors are currently in various planning stages:
| Corridor | Route | Status Summary |
|---|---|---|
| East‑Coast DFC | Kharagpur (WB) → Vijayawada (AP) | DPR completed; funding route approved; priority for sanction next |
| East‑West DFC | Dankuni → Palghar | DPR awaiting Railway Board sanction; planned via Odisha, Chhattisgarh, MP |
| North‑South DFC | Itarsi (MP) → Vijayawada (AP) | DPR submitted; awaiting sanction/funding |
- Total estimated investment across future corridors: ₹2 lakh crore ($25–30B), with interest shown by JICA and World Bank
⚙️ Impact Highlights & Developments
- Coal transit times halved: reduced from ~35 hours to ~20 hours via EDFC and WDFC for power plants in northern India
- Logistics cost reduction: DFC network cut cargo logistics costs ~0.5%, boosting supply chain efficiency
- New Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal at New Sanjali in Ahmedabad inaugurated July 2025—DFCCIL’s first private terminal. It connects Gujarat industrial hubs to ports and the DFC network
- Other milestones include bullet-train infrastructure built over DFC alignments (e.g., steel bridge near Bharuch)
⚠️ Challenges & Issues
- In May 2025, 14 newly built viaduct pillars near Palghar were demolished due to structural design changes, highlighting quality-control lapses in WDFC execution
- Delay in final commissioning due to land acquisition issues and contractor setbacks; despite this, DFCCIL is accelerating completion in 2025
📋 At‑a‑Glance Table
| Corridor | Status | % Completed | Operational Since | Trains/day (approx) | Full Commission Target |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eastern DFC | Fully operational | 100% | Feb–Apr 2024 | ~209 | Completed |
| Western DFC | Nearly ready | ~96.4% | Partial (2025) | ~182 (growing) | Oct–Dec 2025 |
| East‑Coast DFC | DPR stage | N/A | N/A | N/A | Planned |
| East‑West DFC | DPR submitted | N/A | N/A | N/A | Planned |
| North‑South DFC | DPR submitted | N/A | N/A | N/A | Planned |
🧠 Final Takeaway
- Eastern Corridor: Fully functional, decongesting passenger lines and ensuring efficient freight movement across northern and eastern India.
- Western Corridor: Close to completion, with operational sections in Maharashtra and Gujarat, full commissioning anticipated by end‑2025.
- Next Phase corridors: East‑Coast, East‑West, and North‑South corridors are in planning, awaiting final approvals and funding.
