Driverless train: Prime Minister Modi launches

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the driverless, automated ‘Metro’ train service in Delhi on the 28th.

Metro train service, known as ‘Magenta Line’, runs for 37 km between Janakpuri West – Botanical Gardens, Delhi. On the 28th, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the first fully automated train service on this route.

In addition, the NCMC, also known as the National Public Operations Card Service, will be introduced on the New Delhi – Dwarka Division, Route 21. The card, called NCMC, reads, ‘One country; Introduced under the ‘One Card’ scheme. This card can be used not only for metro train travel, but also for bus travel across the country, toll booth and parking fees. In addition, the facility has been developed to use this card to buy goods in stores, withdraw money at ATMs.

Features of the new Metro trains:

1. Fixed six car trains with 67% Motor cars instead of 50% in earlier trains, ie, each six car train will have four Motor cars and two trailer cars*

  • Higher acceleration resulting in 10% increase in scheduled speed.
  • Higher regeneration resulting in lower energy consumption by 20%.

2. Wider carbody of 3.2m wide against earlier design of 2.9m wide car body on Standard Gauge.

3. Maximization of Passenger carrying space

  • Equipments placed beneath the Seats to release additional space (2.0 sqm) for 12 more passengers.
  • Wider gangway (1120mm as compared to 1030mm).
  • Increased space in Unattended Train Operation (UTO) mode (approx 5.0 sqm), Overall approx 40 more passenger in the driver’s Car (since the driver’s cabin would be removed in case of ‘driverless’ operation).

4. Passenger Comfort and Convenience

  • Provision of Wi-Fi internet facility in trains.
  • Digital Route Map- 37 inch LED type, fully programmable with dynamic change of split screens.
  • Fully programmable LCD screens with videos, graphics, animations, real time video streaming.
  • Improved air circulation.
  • Charging Point + USB port facility.
  • Provision of Lumber support/Backrest near wheel chair area.
  • Redesigned Grab rail/ pole layout.

5. Noise Reduction Measures

  • Improved Floor Design with high density ceramic wool insulation
  • Wheel with noise dampers
  • Curve actuated WFL & HPF for reducing squealing noise on curve.

6. Aesthetic exterior/ Interior design with:

  • Aero Dynamic front profile with wide Wind screen glass with front evacuation arrangement.
  • Aesthetically designed energy efficient LED head lights and marker lights.
  • Ceramic Coated Aluminum Interior Panel with superior finish, Improve floor covering & Wheel chair marking on floor, Colourful Passenger Seats.

7. Energy Efficient Design

  • Higher Regeneration.
  • LED saloon lights with automatic dimming facility based on ambient light.
  • Inverter controlled energy efficient HVAC System with eco friendly R-407C refrigerant.

8. Designed for Unattended Train Operation (UTO) mode of operation

  • Remote Control of Trains: Starting and stopping, acceleration & braking, operation of doors and handling of emergencies are fully automated without any on board staff.
  • Two way communication between Operation Control Centre (OCC) & Train.
  • Live streaming from inside car CCTV system to OCC & vice versa.
  • Obstruction Deflection Device (ODD) is installed to push away small obstructions on track to avoid derailment.
  • Additional 2 Front Facing Cameras (DM)+ 1 Detrainment Camera (DM)

Here’s the latest, comprehensive update on driverless metro train operations in India as of mid‑2025:

🚆 1. India’s First Autonomous Metro: Delhi Metro

  • Delhi Metro’s Magenta Line (Janakpuri West–Botanical Garden) began fully automated, driverless operations with Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4) control in December 2025, and later extended to the Pink Line in November 2025
This makes Delhi Metro one of only ~7% of metro systems worldwide capable of driverless running.([turn0search6]turn0search0]turn0search21)
  • Initial operations included roving attendants onboard. Over time, driver cabins have been removed and attendants are being phased out, allowing truly cabin-less operation. Safety and signalling are managed via CBTC from centralized control centers.([turn0search7]turn0search21)

🏙️ 2. Bengaluru Metro: Namma Metro’s Driverless Future

  • Yellow Line of Namma Metro (RV Road–Bommasandra) is the first to receive prototype driverless train sets using CBTC signalling, arriving from China in early 2025 with full localisation to India at Titagarh Rail Systems.([turn0search3]turn0search2]turn0search18)
  • In January 2025, BMRCL formally received the first wholly ‘Make in India’ driverless trainset, built at TRSL’s Uttarpara factory, readying it for commercial operations.([turn0search1]turn0search4)
  • Operations will initially include onboard personnel for oversight, pending formal approval from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS). Full driverless services are expected by mid–late 2025.([turn0search10]turn0news16)

🌆 3. Mumbai Metro: Line 7 (and 2A/2B) Driverless Capability

  • Line 7 and Line 2A/2B of Mumbai Metro are equipped with driverless-capable rolling stock, built by BEML at its Bangalore factory and tested since 2025—the first driverless coaches manufactured in India.([turn0search20]turn0search19)
  • While the infrastructure supports driverless operation, formal launch details for autonomous service are yet to be confirmed.

📍 4. Chennai Metro & Future Expansion

  • For Phase 2 of Chennai Metro, 32 driverless (UTO) trainsets have been ordered from Alstom India, the last in a series of UTO procurements. The first delivery is expected by February 2027, with final units arriving by mid‑2028 and full testing completed thereafter.([turn0news15]turn0search22)
  • Separately, the Porur–Poonamallee stretch of Chennai’s Yellow Line is undergoing trials and is anticipated to open by December 2025. It will operate with driverless-capable systems but initial services will include onboard staff.([turn0news14]turn0search22)

📊 5. Overview Table

Metro System Line / Phase Driverless Status Rollout Timeline
Delhi Metro Magenta & Pink Fully driverless (GoA4) Operational since Dec 2025 / Nov 2025
Namma Metro Yellow Line Phase‑2 Prototype arrived; GoA4 Commercial by mid–late 2025
Mumbai Metro Lines 7 / 2A/2B Driverless-capable rolling stock Pending full commissioning
Chennai Metro Phase‑2 (Red/Purple/Yellow) UTO-ready trainsets ordered By 2027–28; Porur-Poonamallee by Dec 2025

🔧 Why This Matters

  • CBTC signalling enables automated, precise train operations (e.g., 60–90‑second headways), improving throughput and reliability.([turn0search5])
  • Removal of driver cabins offers more passenger space, smoother boarding, and real-time CCTV integration.
  • Automated systems significantly reduce delays, minimize human errors, and optimize energy usage.

💬 Voices from the Community

  • Enthusiasts on Reddit highlight that:

“Delhi’s Magenta Line already runs driverless” and combing through Reddit threads confirms:
“Ahmedabad also has signaling, tracks and rolling stock that support driverless operations”—though plans to activate have not been confirmed.([turn0reddit26])

✅ Final Takeaways

  • Delhi Metro leads the way with fully autonomous lines already in commercial service.
  • Bengaluru Metro’s Yellow Line is on track to join the list within 2025, powered by Indian-made trains.
  • Mumbai and Chennai Metro systems have procured or are procuring driverless-compatible assets, with gradual rollouts expected into the late 2020s.
