NEW DELHI: Taking into consideration different conditions that arise while we decide to make our travel by Indian railways, the behemoth has been generous to offer transfer facility to a different passenger. As per the company’s website, the facility is extended to both online and offline tickets. And for both, the request for such a transfer of confirmed ticket of railways to another passenger has to be made 24 hours prior to the scheduled departure time of the booked train. The transfer facility in case of offline tickets is though restricted to just once. Here are few other notable points that travellers’ should pay heed to while transferring their confirmed ticket:
  1. The transfer is allowed to and among family members i.e. father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter, husband or wife.
  2. Online tickets are transferred by visiting the nearest reservation counter of the railways and producing the print out of the e-ticket.
  3. As per Indian railways, the request for transfer should not be over 10% of the total number of group members.
  4. The transfer is also possible to another government servant on duty but the same has to be effected 24 hours in advance.
  5. The train ticket can also be transferred to students of recognized institutes provided the head over there places the request atleast 48 hours before or to a marriage party group but the request has to be made by the head therein.

  4. About the basis of calculation of concession; number of concessions
  5. All concessional ticket fares are calculated on the basis of fares for mail/express trains, irrespective of the type of train (mail/express/passenger) by which a passenger travels.
  6. Concessions are admissible only on the base ticket price, and not on additional charges like super-fast surcharge, reservation fee, etc.
  7. Additionally, a passenger can only avail one type of concession at a time.
  8. About permission for break of journey; change of class
  9. Notably, a break of journey is not permitted on a concession ticket for a journey of specific purpose, e.g. a student traveling to/from an examination center.
  10. Such break of journey is allowed only if it’s caused by a natural event.
  11. In addition, a concession ticket holder is not allowed to change to a higher class, even if they’re ready to pay the fare hike.

  13. Except for senior citizens, such concessions on train tickets are given only on showing the requisite certificates from the concerned person/organization in India.
  14. Documents issued by authorities in foreign countries are not considered valid.
  15. Also, concessions on season tickets, circular journey tickets, and on tickets of prestigious trains like Rajdhani Express, Shatabdi Express, etc. is not allowed, unless otherwise stated.
  16. About producing documents in case of senior citizens
  17. In the case of senior citizens, no proof of age is required at the time of purchasing of tickets. Concession tickets are issued on demand made through the option in the reservation form.
  18. However, they are required to carry some documentary proof of age that can be produced if demanded by Railway officials during the journey.

You can transfer a confirmed Indian Railways ticket to another person, but only under specific conditions. Here’s a complete step-by-step guide for transferring a confirmed railway ticket to a family member or another eligible person:

✅ Who Can Transfer Tickets?

Indian Railways allows ticket transfer under the following circumstances:

1. To a family member (for personal travel)

  • Spouse
  • Children

2. For government employees

  • Ticket can be transferred to another government employee traveling on duty.

3. Group bookings (schools, colleges, NCC, etc.)

  • 10% of tickets (or up to 10 people) can be transferred to another group member.

You must apply at least:

  • 24 hours before scheduled train departure (for family/govt transfers).
  • 48 hours before departure (for educational institutions/NCC groups).

For Offline Transfer:

  1. Visit the nearest Railway Reservation Counter (PRS window).
  2. Submit a written request along with:
    • Original ticket
    • ID proofs (both parties)
    • Relationship proof (for family)
  3. Request must be made in person by the passenger whose name is on the ticket.

For Online Booked Tickets (IRCTC e-Ticket):

  • You still need to visit the railway station with a printed copy of your e-ticket and other documents.
  • IRCTC does not currently allow online name transfers.
