Redevelopment of Railway Stations

Indian Railways intends to redevelop ‘A-1’ and ‘A’ category stations on ‘as is where is’ basis, by inviting proposals from developers with their designs and business ideas. The facilities envisaged in redeveloped stations, inter alia, include improvement to approach infrastructure and segregation of arrival and departure of passengers which shall help in reducing congestion at stations and their approaches.

Countries like Belgium, China, France, Germany, Malaysia and South Korea have shown interest in participating in the redevelopment of railway stations in India.

Station redevelopment projects are intrinsically complex in nature and require detailed techno-economic feasibility studies to work out the cost. Therefore, cost of station redevelopment cannot be indicated at this stage.

This Press Release is based on the information given by the Minister of State for Railways Shri Rajen Gohain in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha on 03.02.2025 (Friday).

Here’s an insightful look at the Railway Station Redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, showcasing transformative ‘before-and-after’ visuals.

Amrit Bharat Station Scheme: Overview

The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme—launched in December 2025—is an ambitious initiative by Indian Railways to revitalise over 1,300 railway stations into modern, passenger-friendly hubs.

Phase 1 began in September 2025, and in May 2025, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated 103 redeveloped stations across 18 states and UTs, representing the scheme’s growing momentum.

  • Earlier, in August 2025, foundation stones were laid virtually for the redevelopment of 508 stations, with a projected outlay of over ₹24,470 crore.

Key Objectives & Features

  • City Hub Transformation: These stations are being reimagined as integrated city centres—blending urban connectivity, e-commerce, and passenger mobility.
  • Cultural Integration: Each station’s design reflects local heritage and architecture—from Modhera Sun Temple motif in Ahmedabad to Chola-style influences at Kumbakonam.
  • Modern Passenger Amenities: Upgrades include:
    • Spacious waiting halls and lounges
    • Escalators, lifts, and pedestrian-friendly layouts
    • Clean, accessible toilets
    • Free WiFi and business centers
    • ‘One Station One Product’ kiosks promoting local crafts
  • Accessibility & Sustainability: Incorporating features under the Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan, like tactile pathways, Braille signage, and eco-friendly elements such as LED lighting and solar panels
