Above is a clear visual representation of the electrified sections across the Indian Railways network, based on the most recent data as of mid-2025.

Indian Railways Electrification Status – 2025

Current Progress

  • As of March 2025, approximately 98.83% of India’s broad-gauge railway network (around 68,701 km out of 69,512 km) has been electrified.
  • Earlier data from February 2025 also reflects this near-complete status, showing 97.05% electrification, accounting for 64,589 km.

Remaining Work

  • Only about 811 km remain to be electrified, concentrated in challenging regions such as:
    • Assam: ~382 km
    • Tamil Nadu: ~169 km
    • Karnataka: ~151 km
    • Rajasthan: ~93 km
    • Goa: ~16 km

Target

  • The complete electrification of the Indian Railways’ broad-gauge network is now slated for completion by the end of FY 2025–26.
  • Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reaffirmed this target, also highlighting that Indian Railways plans to become net-zero by 2030, with 1.5 GW of renewable power already secured.

State and Zone-Level Snapshot (as of May 31, 2025)

  • States/UTs fully electrified include Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and many others.
  • Regions with significant pending electrification:
    • Assam: ~86.3% electrified
    • Karnataka: ~95.95%
    • Tamil Nadu: ~95.7%
    • Goa: ~91.44%
  • Railway zones like Northern, Eastern, and South Central are fully electrified; others like South Western are nearing completion (~95.17%).

Electrification at a Glance

Metric Value/Status
Electrification Completed ~98.8% (as of Mar–May 2025)
Electrified Route Projection ~68,700 km of broad gauge
Remaining to Electrify ~800–811 km total
Estimated Completion Timeframe By end of FY 2025–26
States Fully Electrified 25 States/UTs
Pending Regions Assam, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Goa, Rajasthan
Net-Zero Target 2030 (accelerated thanks to electrification)

Why It Matters

  • Operational Efficiency: Removes dependency on diesel, lowers fossil fuel costs, and increases speed and reliability.
  • Sustainability: Positions Indian Railways as a global leader in green transport; nearing net-zero emissions ahead of schedule.
  • Modern Infrastructure: Complements investments in renewable energy and high-capacity locomotives (e.g., the 9,000 HP D-90 loco inaugurated in May 2025).
