Here’s a comprehensive overview of internship opportunities in Indian Railways, including structured programs, recent notifications, how to apply, and insights from past participants:

1. Structured Internship Programs via Zonal Railways & IRCTC

Summer & Winter Internships (Structured Program)

  • Indian Railways offers two-month internships (summer/winter), introduced in 2015, targeted at students pursuing Engineering or MBA. These programs span across various domains such as Logistics, HR, Finance, Project Management, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, and IT.
Selection is normally merit-based, and interns receive a Railways-issued certificate upon completion.
Boarding, lodging, and remuneration are not provided.
  • IRCTC portal lists features of this internship, including eligibility and terms & conditions in PDF format.

Zonal/Production Unit Internships — Example: SECR 2025

  • In March 2025, South East Central Railway (SECR) released an official notification offering 523 internship openings across 8 disciplines, including Mechanical (230 slots), Computer Science & IT (150), Civil Engineering (50), HR (40), and more.
  • Key Features:
    • Application Mode: Offline submission via the SECR website.
    • Timeline: Notification issued March 26, applications due by May 30, 2025.

2. Application Process & General Eligibility

  • Students must typically apply via their institute, addressed to the Chief Personnel Officer (CPO) of the desired railway zone or production unit, indicating their preferred zone/division and attaching necessary documents (covering letter, CV, institute ID).
  • Eligibility:
    • Applicants must have first-class academic standing in graduation (Engineering/MBA).
    • Engineering students should have completed at least two years of the degree program.

3. Testimonials & Intern Experience

  • An engineering student who interned at ICF (Integral Coach Factory) described the process as somewhat opaque—requiring internal connections for entry, a relatively short 15-day duration, and a training fee (~₹5,900 including GST).
  • A former intern at CRIS (Centre for Railway Information Systems) gained hands-on experience working on web applications with Angular, contributing to railway asset maintenance systems. This internship was unpaid but valuable in real-world exposure.

4. At a Glance: Internship Summary
