Induction of LHB Coaches on Railways
Linke Holfmann Busch (LHB) coaches are progressively being inducted in train services as per requirement including existing and certain important Rajdhani and Mail / Express trains. Since its introduction, LHB coaches have been inducted on about 14 Rajdhani, 12 Shatabdi and 11 AC Duronto services.
LHB coaches have a higher carrying capacity of about 10-12 per cent as compared to the corresponding ICF design coaches and have better riding comfort, higher speed potential, longer life, upgraded amenities, provision of control discharge toilet system, lower maintenance requirement, enhanced safety features and aesthetic interiors.
A rail coach factory at Palakkad has been sanctioned in Public Private Partnership mode for production of LHB coaches.
This information was given by the Minister of State for Railways Shri Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury in written reply to a question in Lok Sabha today.

Here’s a peek inside the LHB Sleeper Class coach interior—often known as the 3-tier sleeper LHB coach. Let’s explore what makes it so modern, comfortable, and safe for Indian Railways passengers.
Interior Design & Passenger Comfort
Modular, Ergonomic Interiors
- Built with stainless steel and aluminum interiors, the coach is lightweight yet robust, offering increased space and a+10–12% greater passenger capacity over traditional ICF coaches
- Modular interiors include integrated lighting in ceilings and luggage racks, giving a streamlined and contemporary look
- A sophisticated air conditioning system with humidity control and electronically controlled ducts ensures consistent comfort across seasons
Safety & Ride Smoothness
- Anti-telescopic design prevents coaches from piling on top of each other in accidents, significantly enhancing passenger safety
- Advanced features like axle-mounted disc brakes, wheel slide protection (WSP), and anti-climbing couplers elevate both safety and braking efficiency at high speeds
- Superior suspension systems deliver a smoother ride—measured by a lower ride index—resulting in less jolting compared to ICF coaches
Passenger-Friendly Features
- Interiors boast sealed large windows with better insulation and clear views, lowering noise levels to ~60 dB (down from ~100 dB in older coaches)
- Toilets with controlled discharge systems ensure waste is released only at speeds above 30 kmph—keeping stations clean
- Vestibule gangways allow seamless movement between coaches, especially useful for passengers with heavy luggage or limited mobility
Highlighted Interior Enhancements
- Power & Entertainment Utilities: Some advanced LHB coaches (e.g., AC 3-Tier Economy) offer individual reading lights, mobile charging points, snack tables, and personal storage for bottles and phones
- Accessibility Features: New prototypes include Divyangjan-friendly entrances, compartments, and toilets in line with accessibility norms (Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan)
- Durable Furnishings: Use of anti-skid PVC floors, fire-retardant materials, and ergonomic seats with PU foam, gas-spring recline, and no visible screws for safety and aesthetics
