Magh Mela IRCTC Special Arrangement : Detailed preparations are being done by North Central Railway for Magh Mela-2025

Every year the Northern Regional Railway announces special trains (Allahabad, Manduadih, Prayagraj, Gorakhpur, Jhusi, Chhapra) for Magh Mela. We will update the schedule, route, time table, booking date, frequency and fare after the announcement of the North Central Railway and North Eastern Railway Press Release.

Elaborate preparations by North Central Railway for Magh Mela-2025

Special arrangement being made in view of Covid-19

General Manger Sri Rajiv Chaudhry reviewed preparedness for Magh Mela-2025 with AGM Shri Ranjan Yadav, PHODs of North Central Railway, DRM Prayagraj, Shri Mohit Chandra and other officials from HQ and Prayagraj division.North Central Railway has made elaborate planfor safe and comfortable transport of pilgrims travelling in and out of Prayagraj during the Magh Mela 2025. In this review meeting a detailed presentation covering arrangements made during previous Magh Mela,this year Mela challenges, infrastructure works, traffic plan, assistance required etc. was made by Prayagraj Division.

On the front of infrastructure status of important works in Prayagraj area like superfast washing line, G+5 multistory building, skywalk, platform no. 7 & 8 resurfacing etc. at Prayagraj Jn station and other works at Prayagraj Chheoki, Naini and other stations were reviewed. Presentation made by Prayagraj division covered estimated and actual outward Railway passengers and special trains operated in Magh Mela-2025 to work out requirements for Magh Mela-2025 which as per civil authorities is expected to attract similar crowd. Besides previous Magh Mela experience, regular train running and carrying capacity during Covid-19 shall also be accounted for to work out requirement of special trains for Magh Mela-2025.

Like previous Mela, entry and exit at main stations during main bathing period shall be regulated to have distinctly separate entry and exit and approach roads etc.jointly agreed and issued by Railway and Civil authorities. Mela Controls manned by officers shall be operated at all stations which will be centrally connected with main control being set up at Prayagraj Jn. station. CCTV feed from different Railway stations and important locations of Mela and City shall be made available in central control tower. Adequate arrangements for communication like Hot lines, VHF sets, Control phones, PA system etc. are being made available at stations and control towers. Like previous years, passenger facilitation and exhibition center has been planned in Mela area equipped with enquiry and ticketing system. Adequate emergency measures like ambulances, medical teams, firefighting arrangements etc. are planned and mock drills are being conducted to assess actual efficacy of these arrangements. Provision of adequate signages, demarcation of stations and passenger enclosures to handle direction wise traffic, colour coding of direction wise traffic and elaborate arrangements for dissemination of information to public have also been planned. Additional security, commercial operating and maintenance personnel are also being arranged for smooth conduct of Mela. Besides operating additional ticket counters, mobile ticketing units and hand held METMs shall also be deployed.

Beside these standard arrangements North Central Railway is also planning for additional requirement for safe and efficient handling of pilgrims during current crisis of Covid-19. These arrangements include screening arrangements for passengers and special medical booths to handle passengers with Covid-19 like symptoms; arrangements for physical distancing in enclosures, platform and trains; provision of adequate sanitizer dispensers and other hand hygiene arrangements; segregation of passengers limited to each train capacity; frequent cleaning of enclosures, platforms, trains and other area coming in contact with passengers etc.

General Manager Shri Rajiv Chaudhry advised that besides regular coordination meetings with civil authorities, items requiring coordination with adjoining Northern and North Eastern Railways should also be monitored closely.

Indian Railways launches dedicated trains during the Magh Mela to accommodate the massive influx of devotees heading to Prayagraj. In one year, North Central Railway alone ran 20 special trains, while North Railway added five more, along with contributions from the North Eastern Railway zone. Temporary reservation facilities were also set up near the Parade Ground opposite Sangam to help pilgrims avoid long queues at the main station.

These trains operate from various regions, with routes tailored to bolster accessibility and manage crowd flow during key bathing days.


2. Specific Train Services (e.g., 2025 Edition)

During the Magh Mela 2025, several special trains were introduced:

  • 05107: Banaras (Varanasi) → Prayagraj Rambagh
    • Runs on 13, 16, 31 January; 4, 15, 28 February
    • Departs Varanasi at 22:30, arrives Rambagh around 02:20
  • 05108: Return service Rambagh → Banaras on select dates, departing at 07:20 and arriving by 11:00
  • 05109: Alternate Banaras → Rambagh service at 05:30, landing at 09:00
  • 05110: Corresponding return Rambagh → Banaras at 11:00 arrival by ~11:00 pm the same day

Additional specials ran from Deoria and Gorakhpur:

  • 05117: Bhatni → Prayagraj Rambagh (31 January depart, ~04:00 arrival)
  • 05118: Return Rambagh → Bhatni (1 February depart, ~18:00 arrival)
  • 05120: Gorakhpur → Rambagh (31 January depart around 16:00, arrival ~02:15)
  • 05119: Return Rambagh → Gorakhpur (1 February depart ~05:00, arrival ~14:40)

These trains typically featured unreserved general-class coaches, often comprising 10 general coaches plus 2 SLRs.
