Indian Railways provides a 0.5% discount on the base fare of suburban season tickets (monthly, quarterly, half‑yearly, yearly) when payment is made through digital modes like debit cards, credit cards, UPI (BHIM), e-wallets, etc.
Contents
✅ Key Provisions: Discount on Season Tickets
Digital Payment Discount
- A 0.5% concession on the base fare only of season tickets (City/MST, QST, HST, YST) issued for suburban zones, applied only if payment is made digitally. Other surcharges such as MUTP, mela surcharge, GST, etc., are applied after the discount
- Introduced initially via a Railway Board Commercial Circular effective from 1 January 2025, and extended annually—with the latest extension confirmed up to 31 March 2025.
Applicable Payment Methods
- Digital payments include debit & credit cards, UPI, Aadhaar-enabled Payment System (AePS), e-wallets, and USSD transactions—used via UTS apps, counters, or ticket vending machines.
🧾 Discount Illustration
If a monthly suburban season ticket’s base fare is ₹1,000:
- Digital payment discount = ₹5 (0.5%) → Net base fare = ₹995
- Additional duties (surcharges, taxes, GST) added on ₹995
- No discount on those surcharges
ℹ️ Limitations & Further Notes
- Only for suburban season tickets—no discount applies to general ticket fares, reserved train tickets, or non-suburban passes.
- The offer is valid for both online and counter booking, provided digital mode is used.
- As of 2025, the discount was still active under a renewed Circular, but further renewals beyond March 2025 are not officially confirmed.
🧠 Community Feedback (from Reddit & public)
- Passengers have reconfirmed use of UTS app for season ticket purchase and accept digital payments. However, no discussion of more recent discount expiries in user threads.
- Others confirm that IRCTC/Indian Railways generally don’t run promotional offers, especially beyond season ticket concessions from official circulars.
