(a) the number of railway projects approved by the Government in Jharkhand during the last three years along with the details of those projects;

(b) the details of the projects out of above on which work has already been started; and

(c) the details of the funds allocated/utilized for the projects on which work has started during each of the last three years?.

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (a) TO (c) OF UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 1479 BY SHRIMATI ANNPURNA DEVI TO BE ANSWERED IN LOK SABHA ON 27.11.2025 REGARDING RAILWAY PROJECTS IN JHARKHAND

(a) to (c): Presently, Railways have taken up 30 railway projects of New line/Doubling falling fully/partly in the State of Jharkhand at total cost of Rs.40,020 crore. These projects consist of 14 New Line projects having length of 1,463 Km with aggregate cost of Rs.25,535 crore and 16 Doubling projects having length of 1,145 Km with aggregate cost of Rs.14,485 crore.

Out of above projects, 10 projects (5 new line projects having length of 299 Km with aggregate cost of Rs.6,470 crore and 5 doubling projects having length of 202 Km with aggregate cost of Rs. 3,339 crore) have been included in last three years (2025-2025).

Details of projects including funds allotted/utilized are available in public domain on Indian Railways website i.e. www.indianrailways.gov.in > Ministry of Railways > Railway Board > About Indian Railways > Railway Board Directorates > Finance (Budget).

Review of 256 throughput enhancement projects has been carried out and with focused approach, the projects have been prioritized into Super Critical Projects (58 nos.), Critical Projects (68 nos.) and other throughput enhancement projects (130 nos.)

Presently, the balance length of Super Critical Projects is 2,347 Km, 5676 km of Critical Projects and 9,703 Km for other Projects. The throw-forward for these projects is of the order of Rs.1.84 lakh crore and all out sincere and focused approach is being adopted by Railways for quick execution of projects so as to get early returns to Railways.

For capacity enhancement projects, etc. institutional financing has been done by arranging loan of Rs.1.5 lakh crore, which has increased Railways’ capacity for committed fund provision for essential projects.

Here’s a complete update on new, ongoing, and proposed railway projects in Jharkhand as of August 2025:


🚆 1. Major Doubling & Multitracking Projects

Koderma–Barkakana (Arigada) Doubling – 133 km

  • Cabinet-approved in June 2025 under PM Gati Shakti, costing ₹3,063 crore.
  • It connects key coal districts and enhances the shortest route between Patna and Ranchi passing through Koderma, Chatra, Hazaribagh, and Ramgarh

Third & Fourth Lines on Dangoaposi–Jaroli

  • Approved in July 2025 for Odisha and Jharkhand border areas, dedicated to boosting ore transport capacity. The project spans several hundred km and costs ₹11,169 crore. Completion expected by 2028–29

Sonnagar–Patratu Third Line (Sigsigi–Karkatta–Untari Road)

  • A 10.47 km stretch commissioned in March 2025 to decongest coal-heavy routes. This is part of a larger 291 km corridor in progress by RVNL

🛤️ 2. New Lines—Connecting Underserved Districts

First-Time Rail Connectivity to Four Districts

  • Preliminary surveys completed for:
    • Lohardaga → Gumla (~55 km)
    • Gumla → Simdega (~43 km)
    • Hatia → Khunti (~20 km)
    • Hazaribagh → Chatra (~42 km)
  • Reports submitted for DPR preparation, aimed to connect these districts to Ranchi division after 75 years

Badampahar–Kendujhargarh (82 km), Bangriposi–Gorumahisani (86 km) and Chakulia–Buramara (60 km)

  • Approved in August 2025 to serve mining regions in Jharkhand and Odisha; estimated ₹6,294 crore

🚄 3. Vande Bharat & Premium Connectivity

  • Ranchi–Howrah Mini Vande Bharat Express began in September 2025, operating six days a week with AC Chair Car and Executive Chair Car
  • Tatanagar–Brahmapur Vande Bharat Express also launched in September 2024, further enhancing Jharkhand–Odisha connectivity
  • Patna–Ranchi Vande Bharat Express operational since June 2023, six days weekly with high-speed travel

🏗️ 4. Station Redevelopment & Capacity Expansion

  • Tatanagar Station Redevelopment is underway (₹348 crore), featuring new platforms, commercial zones, and enhanced passenger facilities. Redevelopment is fast-tracked, construction expected within five months
  • Amrit Bharat Scheme earmarks ₹7,302 crore for Jharkhand’s rail development in 2025–26—including upgrades at Ranchi, Hatia, Tatanagar, and 57 other stations
