Railway Projects are sanctioned Zonal Railway wise, not State wise as Indian Railways’ network spans across various State boundaries. As on 01.04.2025, total 513 projects (189 New line, 54 Gauge Conversion and 270 doubling) covering a total length of 53,039 Km including falling fully/ partly in the state of Delhi/ NCR, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal are in different stages of planning/ sanction/ execution, out of which 10,013 Km length has been commissioned and an expenditure of Rs. 1.86 Lakh Crore has been incurred upto March, 2025.

During 2025-19 total 13,124 Km length (New line, Gauge conversion and Doubling) has been commissioned on Indian Railways, which is 73% more than during 2009-14 (7,599 Km).

Completion of any Railway Project(s) depends on various factors like quick land acquisition by State Government, forest clearance by officials of forest department, shifting of infringing utilities, statutory clearances from various authorities, geological and topographical conditions of area, law and order situation in the area of project site, number of working months in a year for particular project site due to climate conditions etc. and all these factors differs from project to project and affects the completion time of the project (s).

Average annual expenditure for new lines, Gauge Conversion and Doubling projects over Indian Railways during 2014-19 has increased to Rs. 26,026 Cr/ year from Rs. 11,527 Cr/ year (during 2009-14) which is 126% more than during 2009-14. The expenditure during 2019-20 further increased to Rs. 39,836 Cr., which is 246% more than average annual expenditure of 2009-14 and the highest ever expenditure in any financial year.

Gunupur–Therubali (Odisha) – 73.6 km
Junagarh–Nabrangpur (Odisha) – 116.2 km

Bangriposi–Gorumahisani (Odisha) – 85.6 km
Malkangiri–Pandurangapuram (via Bhadrachalam; spanning Odisha, AP & Telangana) – 173.6 km

Amaravati line (AP) – 87 km new line connecting Hyderabad, Chennai, and Kolkata corridors, including port links.
North Bihar–Northeast double line – 256 km buildout to improve connectivity for people and goods, including Ayodhya–Sitamarhi.

Priority Connectivity & Strategic Expansion

Sivok–Rangpo (West Bengal–Sikkim) – 45 km, under construction; strategically vital for military logistics and planned extensions to Gangtok and Nathu La.
Rishikesh–Karnaprayag (Uttarakhand) – 126 km line through the Himalayas (38 tunnels), feeder corridor for the sacred Char Dham railway network; ~70% completed, operational by end of 2026.

Suburban & Regional Rail Corridors

Bengaluru Suburban Rail – Four-line network (Sampige, Mallige, Parijaata, Kanaka).
- Mallige and Kanaka lines under construction; opening by end-2026.
- Sampige line (KSR to Devanahalli/Airport) expected by mid-2029.
Haryana Eastern Orbital Rail Corridor (EORC) – 90 km extension along the Eastern Peripheral Expressway connecting Sonipat → Noida → Faridabad; DPR completed.

Major Doubling & Multitracking Projects

Koderma–Barkakana (Jharkhand) – 133 km doubling, relieving coal-transport congestion.
Ballari–Chikjajur (Karnataka–Andhra Pradesh) – 185 km doubling.

These are part of a broader ₹6,405 crore initiative across seven districts to enhance freight and passenger capacity.

Infrastructure Boosts & Institutional Expansion

Jammu Railway Division established to improve operations across Jammu & Kashmir.
South Coast Railway Zone HQ laid in Visakhapatnam to support port-linked expansions.

Regional Investment Surge

Assam & Northeast rail network expanded by 1,824 km since 2025, surpassing Sri Lanka’s entire system.
A record ₹10,440 crore allocated in 2025–26 for further regional modernization and station development.
