Here’s the official procedure for sending New Year greeting cards via e‑mail within Indian Railways:

Directive from the Railway Board (Issued December 5, 2017)

  • The Railway Board issued a circular (No. 2017/O&M/3/8) stating that:

“printing and issuing of hard copy of New Year greeting card may be stopped forthwith. Greeting cards for New Year may now be sent through email only.”

  • This directive was part of a broader initiative to promote austerity and eliminate unnecessary formalities across the railways, which included a ban on presenting bouquets during official occasions.

What This Means for Railways Staff and Departments

  • Hard‑copy greeting cards for the New Year are no longer to be printed or distributed.
  • All New Year greetings should now be sent electronically via email, ensuring compliance with Railway Board instructions.
  • Status applies across all departments and Railway PSUs.

Suggested Email Greeting Practices

While the policy doesn’t detail format or templates, here are some recommendations to help craft appropriate e‑mail greetings:

  • Subject Line: “Wishing You a Joyous New Year” or “[Department Name] – New Year Greetings 2026”
  • Content: Keep it concise and professional. For example:

    “Dear [Colleagues/Team],
Warm wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year! May the coming year bring success, collaboration, and positive milestones for us all.
    Best regards,
    [Your Name/Department]

  • Branding: You may embed a simple graphic or use a themed e‑mail footer for warmth and festivity—nothing elaborate.
  • Distribution: Send to departmental mailing lists or relevant stakeholders while maintaining standard official communication etiquette.
