Here’s a complete breakdown of the ID proof rules for train travel in India, especially for E-tickets—what’s valid, what’s required, and why it matters:

1. Booking E-Tickets: No ID Input Needed

  • You do not need to provide any ID details at the time of booking an e-ticket—it’s purely a reservation measure.
  • However, carrying a valid photo ID in original is mandatory while you travel. You’ll be treated as traveling without a ticket otherwise

2. Accepted Original ID Proofs

Accepted IDs include (in order):

  1. Passport
  2. Voter ID (Election Commission)
  3. Driving Licence (RTO)
  4. PAN Card
  5. Govt-issued photo ID with serial number
  6. Student ID from a recognized institution
  7. Bank passbook with photo (nationalized bank)
  8. Credit Card with laminated photo
  9. Aadhaar (printed, e-Aadhaar, or m-Aadhaar)
  10. Govt/PSU-issued photo IDs with serial number
  11. DigiLocker-stored Aadhaar or Driving Licence from the “Issued Document” section (not the uploaded version)

3. Proof Requirement in Practice

  • Only one passenger from the PNR group needs to present an original valid photo ID. That satisfies the requirement for the whole PNR.
  • Digital or printed copies won’t suffice, unless explicitly permitted (like DigiLocker documents in the Issued section).
  • TTEs may simply ask for your name and seat number; in many practical scenarios, full ID checks may be skipped—but it’s risky to rely on that.

4. Consequences of Not Carrying Valid ID

If you travel without valid original ID proof, the following may occur:

  • Treated as ticketless traveler
  • Face a ₹440 fine (AC classes) or ₹220 fine (Sleeper)
  • Seat cancellation and potential deboarding
  • No chance of reallocation—even after paying the fine

Quick Reference Table

Stage Requirement & Notes
Booking (E-Ticket) No ID entry required
During Travel Carry one original valid photo ID; photocopies/digital only IDs not accepted (unless via DigiLocker Issued section)
ID Proof Options See list of 11 valid IDs above
Group Travel Rule Only one passenger (per PNR) needs ID (in practice) but each may be asked to show upon TTE discretion
Non-Compliance Consequences Fine, ticket cancellation, no rebooking, potential deboarding
