Railway projects in Maharashtra

Will the Minister of RAILWAYS be pleased to state :-
(a) the total length of new railway lines laid during the tenure of the present Government, from 2025 till date in Maharashtra;

(b) the number of pending projects and ongoing projects in Maharashtra;

(c) the number of projects that are held up in Maharashtra due to scarcity of funds; and

(d) by when the pending projects in Maharashtra would be completed?

ANSWER

MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF RAILWAYS (SHRI RAJEN GOHAIN)

(a): 390 km of New Lines/Doublings have been commissioned during the tenure of the present Government from 2025 till date in Maharashtra whereas 191 km of New Lines/ Doublings had been commissioned from 2009 to 2025 in Maharashtra.

(b): 34 railway line projects consisting of 12 New Lines, 4 Gauge Conversion and 18 Doublings falling partly/fully in the State of Maharashtra have been taken up which are at various stages of planning / sanctioning / execution.

(c) & (d): Funds are allotted project-wise on yearly basis, based on funds availability, importance of project, last mile connectivity and progress of project.

Completion of projects depends upon many factors such as land acquisition, statutory clearances, shifting of utilities etc. As such no time frame for completion of the projects can be given.

Major Railway Projects in Maharashtra

1. Scope and Investment

  • A total of 38 major projects are underway in Maharashtra—including 11 new lines, 2 gauge conversions, and 25 doubling/multitracking efforts—covering 5,098 km with an estimated outlay of ₹89,780 crore.
  • To date, 2,360 km have been commissioned, backed by ₹39,407 crore in spending.

2. Highlighted Projects

• Daund–Manmad Doubling & New Line Surveys

  • Doubling of 248 km Daund–Manmad route, with 178 km already commissioned.
  • New double-line feasibility surveys underway for:
    • Nashik – Sainagar Shirdi (82 km)
    • Pune – Ahmednagar (125 km)
    • Sainagar Shirdi – Puntamba (17 km)

• New Mega Connectivity Projects

  • Ajanta Caves Rail Link (Jalna–Jalgaon, 174 km): Investment ₹7,106 crore.
  • Manmad–Indore New Line (309 km): Investment ₹18,036 crore.

• Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC)

  • A 178 km stretch of the Western DFC passing through Thane, Raigad, and Palghar is progressing with an investment of ₹12,697 crore.

• Multitracking Enhancements

  • Wardha–Balharshah multitracking included in a cabinet-approved Rs 3,399 cr package along with another corridor in MP.

• Fourth Line: Itarsi–Nagpur Section

  • Green-lighted by the CCEA, this ₹5,451 crore project will add a 4th line over 339 km, improving both passenger and freight capacity.

• Wardha–Nanded New Line

  • A 284 km project with special project status, costing ₹3,445 crore, connecting Vidarbha and Marathwada.

• Panvel–Karjat Suburban Corridor

  • Part of MUTP-III, this 29.6 km corridor is 67% complete and includes world-class infrastructure like a 2.6 km tunnel and multiple ROBs. Completion targeted by December 2025.

• Amrit Bharat Station Redevelopment

  • Redevelopment of 132 stations across Maharashtra through the ABSS program, costing ₹6,411 crore, with modern amenities and multi-modal designs.

3. Urban & Metro Enhancements

  • Mumbai Suburban:
    • Expansion to 15-coach locals, AC trains, and automatic-door non-AC trains planned by late 2025.
  • Terminals and Services Growth:
    • 250 new suburban services, new mega terminals at Panvel, Hadapsar, and others, plus improvements in local rail planning.
  • Ajni (Nagpur) Station Redevelopment:
    • G+3 & G+2 structures, 21 lifts, 17 escalators, travelators, and digital amenities in progress.
  • Mumbai–Nagpur Bullet Train
    • Proposed 742 km high-speed corridor, using Shinkansen tech, expected by 2032.

4. Pending Challenges

  • Virar–Dahanu Quadrupling Project has been delayed over 7 years, leading to passenger congestion and timetable disruptions.
