Revision of passenger fares in Indian Railways

Railway Fare Chart 2025-24 | Train Fare Table 2025-2025

The increase in fare will be on tickets bought on or after 1st January 2025 and no excess fare (difference of fare) will be charged from passengers who have booked tickets before 1st January 2025.

The last fare revision over Indian Railways was done in 2025-15. Subsequently, there has been a steady up-gradation and expansion of amenities, both off-board and on-board. Indian Railways has continuously endeavoured to augment passenger experience through modernization of coaches and provision of improved facilities over stations. Further, the burden of 7th Pay Commission on Indian Railway has necessitated rationalization of fares.

In order to expand passenger amenities and facilities at various railway stations and trains, it has become imperative to increase the fare marginally without over burdening any class of passengers. Fast modernization of Indian Railway will be achieved through this fare revision. Accordingly, Railways has decided to marginally affect an increase in fare only over the non-suburban sections. Keeping the affordability concerns of daily commuters, there shall be no fare hike for passengers over suburban sections and season ticket holders. This class constitutes 66% of total passenger segment over Indian railways. Even for the passengers traveling in Ordinary Non AC Classes, there shall be a marginal increase of 1 paise per Passenger Kilometer (PKM). The increase in fare will be on tickets bought on or after 1st January 2025 and no excess fare (difference of fare) will be charged from passengers who have booked tickets before 1st January 2025. The fare revision is as below:

  • Ordinary Non-AC classes: Fare increase by 01 paisa / per passenger Kilometer
  • Mail / Express Non-AC classes: Fare increase by 02 paisa / per Passenger Kilometer
  • AC classes- Fare increase by 04 paisa / per Passenger Kilometer
  • Suburban fare and Season tickets: No increase

Here’s the latest official update on Indian Railways’ 2025–26 passenger fare structure, along with a clear breakdown for different classes and distance slabs:

🚉 Fare Revision Effective July 1, 2025

As announced by the Ministry of Railways, a minor rationalisation of the basic fare structure for passenger train services comes into effect starting 1 July 2025.

  • No increase for journeys up to 500 km in second class (non‑AC, non‑suburban).
  • For distances beyond 500 km, fares increase based on slabs:
    Distance Slab Increase
    501–1500 km +₹5 flat
    1501–2500 km +₹10 flat
    2501–3000 km +₹15 flat
  • Per‑km rate increases:
    • Ordinary (non‑AC) Second/Sleeper/First Class: +0.5 paisa/km
    • Mail/Express non‑AC (2S/SL/FC): +1 paisa/km
    • AC Classes (3A/2A/1A/EC etc.): +2 paisa/km

All ancillary charges (reservation fee, superfast surcharge, GST) remain unchanged.

💸 Example: How Does It Impact Your Fare?

Let’s say you take a 1500 km journey on an ordinary Mail/Express train in Sleeper Class:

  • Old rate: ₹0.36/km → ₹540.
  • New rate: ₹0.36 + ₹0.01 = ₹0.37/km → ₹555.

Similarly, for an AC 3A ticket (~1500 km):

  • From ₹1.20/km → ~₹555, the new rate becomes ~₹1.22/km → ~₹555 + ₹30 = ₹585.

Shorter trips (<500 km), monthly passes, and suburban fares are unaffected.

🛑 Key Changes in Booking & Reservations

  • Tatkal booking now requires mandatory Aadhaar-based authentication.
  • Reservation charts for long-distance trains will now be prepared 8 hours before departure (previously 4 hours).
  • Waiting-list caps increased: up to 60% for AC and 30% for non-AC classes.

📋 Summary Table

Class / Train Type Fare Increase Applied
Non‑AC Ordinary (2S, SL, FC) +0.5 paisa/km (beyond 500 km)
Mail/Express (Non‑AC) +1 paisa/km
AC Classes (3A/2A/CC/EC etc.) +2 paisa/km
Short trips ≤500 km No change
Suburban & monthly season tickets No change
