At present, there is no proposal to withdraw the concessions given to Indian senior citizens and other categories of passengers.  However,  in view of increase in revenue foregone  year after year due to concessions being given to different categories of passengers, senior citizens of foreign nationals and Non-resident Indians have been excluded from the senior citizen category for the purpose of concession in passenger fare.

General Rules & Conditions

  • Concessions apply only on the basic fare; surcharges (e.g., superfast charges, reservation fee, catering, GST) are not discounted. Premium trains may incorporate other charges in exceptions.
  • Only one concession type per passenger per journey.
  • Break of journey is not usually allowed on concession tickets—unless unavoidable and endorsed by a station master.
  • Changing to a higher class is not permitted, even if willing to pay the difference.
  • Most concessions require valid certificates issued by Indian government authorities. Foreign documents are not accepted (except for foreign students in specified cases).
  • Senior citizens need no age proof at purchase but must carry documentary proof while travelling.
