Railways Introduces Hospital Management Information System (HMIS)
HMIS has been launched over 5 Units in South Central Railways and 2 Units over Northern Railway
Mobile application for downloading UMID card has also been launched
Indian Railways has launched the recently integrated Hospital Management Information System (HMIS) and a mobile application for downloading Unique Medical Identity Card (UMID) today i.e., 28th December, 2025. This follows on the back of the successful implementation of the Trial Project of HMIS over Central hospital, Lallaguda, SCR. These services were launched by Shri. Vinod Kumar Yadav, Chairman and CEO, Railway Board through virtual means.
Earlier, on 11th December, 2025, the HMIS trial project was launched with 3 modules i.e., Patient Registration, OPD Doctor Desk & Pharmacy at Central Hospital, Lallaguda. Around 1,000 patients were effectively handled by using the recently launched 3 modules in the trial project of HMIS at Central Hospital, Lallaguda. With its success, now Indian Railways is adding one more module i.e., Laboratory module in addition to the existing three from today i.e., 28th December, 2025 onwards. The HMIS project has accordingly been launched with 4 Modules across in 5 Units of South Central Railway (at Central Hospital, Lallaguda and Health units located at Chilkalguda, Moulali, Kacheguda and Nampally (Hyderabad)) and 2 Units at Northern Railways (Central Hospital, NR and Delhi Divisional Hospital).
The HMIS in Railways has been developed by Indian Railways in coordination with RailTel Corporation Limited. The objective of the HMIS is to provide a single window of clearance of hospital administration activity such as clinical, diagnostics, pharmacy, examinations, industrial health etc.
A mobile application has also been launched today for downloading UMID card through mobile phone for enhancing the integration of UMID with HMIS and also to facilitate the Railway employees for conveniently using UMID card while accessing their health care services. Apart from Railway employees, now their dependents would also able to download UMID cards through this application.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri. Vinod Kumar Yadav, Chairman and CEO Railway Board has said that the launch of the HMIS will transform the Health Care facilities being provided to Railway Employees by dramatically easing access across the Indian Railways network. He further said that with the launch of UMID and HMIS, the Railway Workforce along with their families will now have digital repository of data readily available all the time which will enhance the efficiency of Health Care facilities for all Rail beneficiaries.
Speaking on this occasion, Dr B.P.Nanda, DG, Health Services congratulated South Central Railway and Northern Railway for taking the lead in rolling out of HMIS trial project. He stated that Indian Railways have a wide network of Health Care facilities to cater to its manpower. HMIS seamlessly integrates the data of all the Railway beneficiaries through digital means so that our workforce and their dependents can easily access health care facilities with ease across Indian Railways, while maintaining the digital database to support ease of access.
Shri Gajanan Mallya, General Manager, SCR opined that implementation of HMIS will bring a paradigm shift in Medical management and treatment. The data sourced and developed in implementation of HMIS will assist the medical wing of Railways in providing advanced treatment procedures, it also helps in drug management and better utilization of resources, he added.
Here’s a detailed and verified overview of the Indian Railways’ Hospital Management Information System (HMIS) rollout and its major features, along with related health system updates:
Contents
🏥 1. What Is HMIS?
- Indian Railways implemented a Pan-India Hospital Management Information System (HMIS) across all railway hospitals and health units—695 facilities in total, including central hospitals and smaller health units
- Executed by RailTel (Railways PSU) in collaboration with C-DAC, deploying a web‑based, cloud-hosted system over national infrastructure
- HMIS integrates about 25 modules covering OPD, IPD, labs, pharmacy, electronic medical records (EMR), referrals, queue management, medical claims reimbursements, transport, and much more
📲 2. Key Features & Benefits
- Mobile App Access: Patients access OPD registrations, doctor prescriptions, lab reports, and queue status via the HMIS App. It also supports QR-code self-registration in hospitals, helping skip queues
- Integrated Diagnostics: Lab equipment seamlessly connected—test results uploaded directly to the system and accessible on patients’ mobile devices
- Cross-Hospital Consultation: Rail beneficiaries can consult across multiple hospitals using their Unique Medical ID (UMID), which links data across the network—including family registrations and pensioners
- Clinical & Administrative Automation: Includes modules for admission/discharge, OT & anesthesia, blood bank, pharmacy, medical examinations, sick-fit certification, and reimbursements—improving operational efficiency and reducing paper workflows.
📊 3. Coverage & Impact
- HMIS rolled out in 156 facilities by September 2025 and later achieved full coverage across all 695 hospitals and clinics by late 2025
- The platform currently supports over 10 million beneficiaries, including regular employees, pensioners, and dependents—tied to about 43 lakh UMID cards issued
- Monthly usage surged: from ~1.7 lakh records in July 2025 to ~7.5 lakh by November 2025, marking over 330% growth in service engagement
🌱 4. Strategic Advantages
- Improved Patient Experience and reduced wait times via streamlined OPD registration, prescriptions, and lab workflows.
- Better Clinical Decision-Making: EMR access across facilities and integrated diagnostic data supports more accurate care.
- Data-Driven Hospital Management: Admins receive real-time analytics for resource utilization, performance monitoring, and planning
- AI & ML Ready Infrastructure: HMIS is built with future scalability in mind for predictive health modeling and preventive care analysis
- Compliance with Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission: Fully interoperable with national digital health standards, making future integrations smooth
🔄 5. Recent Healthcare Digitization Initiative
- In May 2025, Indian Railways rolled out a digital referral system: now, all referrals to over 1,500 empanelled hospitals must be processed digitally, covering 6.6 million IRHS beneficiaries, eliminating paper forms and increasing transparency
