Speed Upgrades on SWR Routes
1. Planned Upgrade to 130 km/h on Key Sections
SWR has identified several important sections targeted for upgrading to 130 km/h, which would notably reduce travel times:
- Bengaluru–Guntakal
- Bengaluru ↔ Ramanagara–Mandya–Mysuru
- Bengaluru–Jolarpettai
- Dharwad–Birur
- Shivamogga Town–Bengaluru
These upgrades would especially benefit high-speed trains like the Vande Bharat Express and Superfast Mail/Express services currently capped at 110 km/h. For example, the Bengaluru–Dharwad run could shrink from 8–9 hours to roughly 5½–6 hours.
2. Already Upgraded to 110 km/h in Select Areas
SWR has successfully pushed speeds up to 110 km/h on multiple sections, thanks to infrastructure enhancements:
- Track renewal and alignment improvements (super-elevation, tamping, UNIMAT usage)
- Joints and ballast upgrades
- Removal of sharp curves and speed restrictions
Notably, the Yelahanka–Chikballapur stretch (46 km) is now cleared for 110 km/h operations, up from earlier speed caps of 50 km/h and 75 km/h.
3. Punctuality and Mobility Gains Across Zones
- In 2022–23, SWR recorded a staggering 53% improvement in train mobility.
- Average speed of goods trains (including stabling) rose from 13.97 km/h to 21.6 km/h.
- This was enabled by major infrastructure enhancements such as commissioning of bypass lines, doubling of tracks, and extensive electrification
4. Festive Rush Speed Optimizations
In October 2022, in anticipation of increased festive travel, SWR accelerated the running times of 55 trains, achieving a cumulative saving of 1,795 minutes (approx. 30 hours) across services.
- For instance, the Bagalkot–Mysuru passenger saved over 2 hours, while the Chhatrapati Shivaji TN–Bengaluru Udyan Express was sped up by 110 minutes
Summary Table
Type of Speed Improvement | Key Details |
---|---|
Planned 130 km/h upgrades | Upgrading major SWR routes (e.g., Bengaluru–Dharwad, Mysuru, Guntakal) |
Existing 110 km/h zones | Select stretches like Yelahanka–Chikballapur have been upgraded |
Mobility enhancement (2025–23) | Mobility up 53%; goods train speeds significantly increased |
Festive rush optimizations (2025) | 55 trains expedited, saving ~30 hours cumulatively of travel time |
What This Means for Passengers
- Faster travel on key SWR corridors is becoming a reality, with upgrades already in place and more underway.
- Increased punctuality and smoother operations, especially in the goods transport segment, reflect better network efficiency.
- During peak seasons, proactive schedule optimizations offer tangible time savings for travelers.
