🆕 New BG Line & Route Realignment: Future Direct Service May Be Coming
- Southern Railway received approval to operate on the newly commissioned Peralam–Karaikal BG (Broad Gauge) line.
- A proposal is under review to introduce a direct Chennai–Velankanni train via Peralam, Karaikal and Nagore, avoiding earlier reversals at Thiruvarur and Nagappattinam and cutting travel time. This would replace the past slip‑coach operations of Chennai Egmore–Karaikal Kamban Express (which ceased in 2025)
- As of May 31, 2025, the proposal is pending railway board approval. No official train number or schedule is yet announced.
