📢 Western Railway Extends 4 Special Trains to Puri
Starting October 1, 2020, Western Railway extended the termination point of these special services—previously running only up to Bhubaneswar or Khurda Road—all the way to Puri Station
- 02843 / 02844 – Ahmedabad – Puri Superfast Special
- 08405 / 08406 – Ahmedabad – Puri Special
- 08401 / 08402 – Okha – Puri Special
- 02973 / 02974 – Gandhidham – Puri Superfast Special
This extension allowed the trains to serve direct services into Puri, supporting pilgrims and passengers heading to Odisha’s coastal and temple destinations
❓ Is This Still Valid in 2025?
- The extension was implemented during the COVID special train era and may no longer be active as of 2025.
- Many of these services have reverted to regular service numbers (such as 22901/22902 Gandhidham–Puri SF Express) or may have been discontinued entirely.
- For instance, the Gandhidham–Puri Express now runs under 22973/22974 or 12993/12994 depending on route and composition—check the exact train number before booking
💡 What This Means
- The special trains listed above were definitely extended to Puri during the COVID period (2020).
- As of mid‑2025, they may be:
- Converted into permanent express/superfast services,
- Discontinued, or
- Renumbered under Western Railway or East Coast Railway zones,
reflecting regular operating patterns.
✅ What You Should Do Next
If you’re planning travel:
- Check official sources (e.g. IRCTC, NTES) by entering regular service train numbers like 22901/22902 or 12993/12994 for Gandhidham–Puri.
- Verify the train status, running days and halts, since the COVID special regimes have largely ended.
- If interested, I can look up detailed schedule, coach composition, and fare for any of the current permanent trains—just let me know your route or preference!
Also, worth noting: For Puri Rath Yatra 2025, East Coast Railway is operating over 365 special trains across various routes into Puri to manage festival rush, including enhancements like dedicated booking counters and improved station infrastructure
